This exciting "GIMMICK" poster from the beloved master of gimmick films, WILLIAM CASTLE 's horror gem is in Very Good / Excellent condition! Original folds with light wear at the fold lines and crosspoints ; light edge and surface wear ; some small chipping at the top right and bottom left edges with slight paper loss ; approx. 1" tears at the top center and top right & left fold edges ; an approx. 2" horizontal tear at the top crosspoint seam with slight paper loss, repaired on the back with transparent tape. A nice, clean-looking poster with bright, unfaded colors and sharp images. Printed on flat poster stock.
Cult director WILLIAM CASTLE's reputation as a master of the 'gimmick' horror films was well established by the time this film was released. He electrified theatre seats to shock audience members during The Tingler, insured moviegoers against Death By Fright for his Macabre , dangled glowing skeletons from the ceiling in House on Haunted Hill, had a money-back FRIGHT BREAK during Homicidal , etc. This delightful poster highlights a new gimmick: the PUNISHMENT POLL: toward the film's conclusion, audience members would use a glowing 'ballot" to vote on which of two endings (MERCY or NO MERCY) would decide the title character's fate!
Poster images include tied-and chained actress AUDREY DALTON who squirms in her seat as the fragmented shadow of evil Mr. Sardonicus is cast across her and a good part of the poster. Additional images show the PUNISHMENT POLL 'Thumbs Up / Thumbs Down' ballot (with notations: "IT GLOWS IN THE DARK" and "BE SURE YOUR BALLOT IS ACTIVATED!"), A nice, stylized title logo, spliced by a mysterious image of Sardonicus (played by GUY ROLFE ), and the popular, director's chair silhouette logo of director CASTLE that appeared in most of his ads and posters, notated with: "ANOTHER FRIGHTENING 'FIRST' FROM THE SCREEN'S No. 1 SHOCK MAKER!" A great collectible for any WILLIAM CASTLE / GIMMICK MOVIE FAN!
